He worked as an economist at the European Commission’s DG Competition and at the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division, developing economic analyses for dozens of competition law investigations.

He published research studies and reports and provided capacity building related to a broad range of business activities (including regulated industries, digitalisation, financial and professional services, communications, media and health care).

He has presented expert views to the European Parliament and the UK Parliament.

His studies or statements have been submitted to or published by economics journals and organisations such as the G20, the European Parliament, the OECD and the World Bank.

He has co-authored or overseen reports for regulatory and government agencies in Australia, Greece, Mexico, Romania, the United Kingdom and the United States.

He was a Senior Economist in the Competition Division of the OECD he developed and led the competition assessment of regulation programme and worked on projects related to fining and penalty policies for antitrust violations.

He served as Executive Director of the Competition Commission of Mauritius, where he was the chief executive in charge of running an independent competition authority.

He has presented to and consulted for United Nations bodies.
He obtained an undergraduate degree in economics from King’s College, Cambridge and a PhD in economics from the University of California at Berkeley.
Jens Prüfer
Senior Consultant

With more than 20 years as an economist and business practitioner, Jens Prüfer is Professor of Economics at the University of East Anglia’s School of Economics, Deputy Director of the Centre for Competition Policy, and affiliated with the Tilburg Law and Economics Center (TILEC). Jens is member of the expert group to the EU Observatory on the Online Platform Economy. He is the editor of sioe.org, the website of the Society for Institutional and Organizational Economics, where he also regularly blogs, and a Mercator Fellow at the University of Passau (“Digital Platform Ecosystems”).
His research focuses on institutional and organizational questions, applying economic methodology to a broad set of disciplines, including law, management, political science, history, religious studies, and computer science.
His fields of expertise include:

Institutional Economics, in particular the study of economic governance institutions, which help to support cooperation/honest trade with and without the law (public and private ordering).

Organizational Economics, in particular the economics of non-firm organizations such as nonprofits, cooperatives, social networks, clubs, associations or foundations. Why do these organizations exist and (how) do they behave differently in competitive markets?

He studied Economics and Chinese studies in Tübingen (Germany) and Singapore and holds a PhD in Economics from Goethe University Frankfurt.

Derek Ritzmann

Dr. Derek Ritzmann is an Expert at Economics Partners and is affiliated with Alethius. He is based in Hong Kong, acting for clients across Asia-Pacific. He has specialized in the economics, policy, and law of competition and regulation for over 25 years.
Derek spent over a decade as a senior official at competition and regulatory agencies: as Principal Economist of the ACCC in Australia, the first Chief Economist of the Hong Kong Competition Commission, in the Chief Economist Team at the European Commission. Previously, he practiced with three economic expert firms (Compass Lexecon, London Economics, and KPMG), as a competition lawyer, as a competition expert to the Asian Development Bank, OECD, and several national governments. He has been a professor at the University of Hong Kong and at City University of Hong Kong.
